Uncover the Environmental Toll and Human Cost Hidden in the Global Coffee Supply Chain
Welcome to this month’s edition of the Datadvise Newsletter!
As a leading research firm in the United States, we pride ourselves in uncovering the hard truths and surprising statistics that often escape casual observation. Today, we reveal the hidden price of your daily cup of joe.
In New York, the cost of a cup of coffee is $5 while in historic Boston the same brew demands $4. Here in Atlanta, you will find yourself shelling $3.50 for your caffeine fix. If you jet off to Johannesburg, where fun fact – I spent six years studying and working in law, you’re looking at $2. Despite these regional differences in the price of coffee, each of these transactions have one thing in common – they hide the true cost of a cup of coffee. Our research reveals that the environmental and social impacts of coffee production carry a hefty price tag, one that is often overlooked.
Environmental Impact
Did you know that on average, it takes around 140 liters of water to produce a single cup of coffee? Multiply that by the billions of cups consumed globally each day, and you have a staggering amount of water usage associated with your caffeine fix.
To put that into perspective, that’s equivalent to the amount of water an average person uses for showering in two weeks! This water usage isn’t just a drop in the bucket; it’s a significant strain on our precious water resources.
With the average American consuming roughly 3 cups of coffee per day, that’s a collective water footprint of 420 liters per person! When we multiply this by the millions of coffee drinkers worldwide, it’s clear that our coffee habits have a significant impact on water resources.
That’s not all. Coffee production places significant pressures on the environment as well, and deforestation is a hidden ingredient fueling the coffee industry. Every year, coffee production clears an area roughly the size of 74,000 football fields globally. That’s equivalent to losing an iconic stadium like the Maracana in Rio Di Janeiro every single day.
Studies show coffee cultivation has contributed to a 2.2 million hectare loss of forest cover globally between 2001-2016. Quantifying this directly is challenging, but the World Bank estimates the economic cost of tropical deforestation at $415 billion annually, considering lost ecosystem services and biodiversity.
Social Impact
The global coffee industry is a heavyweight, valued at a staggering USD 104.22 Billion in 2020 and projected to reach USD 151.92 Billion by 2028. But here’s the kicker: While it’s a multi-billion dollar industry, many of the 25 million coffee farmers worldwide earn less than $2 a day.
In fact, coffee farmers receive, on average, only 1% of the retail price of a cup of coffee. That means for every latte you enjoy, the farmer who grew those beans might earn mere cents. A 2022 report by the United Nations reveals that nearly 50% of coffee farmers live below the poverty line.

The good news? You can make a difference with every cup you choose. By opting for shade-grown, certified sustainable coffee, you support farmers who prioritize both their livelihoods and the environment. This reduces deforestation, protects biodiversity, and empowers communities.
